Mass Effect 3 dev porting mystery Square Enix game to Wii U, says CV

Australia-based developer Straight Right is busy porting a major but unnamed Square Enix game to Wii U, according to a new rumour.

Mass Effect 3 Screenshot Straight Right is the developer handling the port of Mass Effect 3 to Wii U, but according to the online CV of Chris Slater, a Technical Project Manager working at the developer, that's not the only high-profile port it's doing for Nintendo's new console.

The Linkedin profile has been edited since NeoGAF unearthed the revelation, but before leak-plugging changes were made, Slater revealed that he's "working for Straight Right on a short term contract, porting a triple-A Square Enix game to the yet-to-be-released Wii U platform".

Which game gets your vote, readers? Hitman Absolution? Deus Ex: Human Revolution?

The patch was released through Steam, and you can read the full details over on Steam's website.

Wii U Pro Controller battery lasts up to 80 hours, retailers claim

The Wii U Pro Controller battery "can last up to 80 hours on a single charge", US retailers GameStop and Amazon have claimed on their websites.

Wii U Screenshot "Your games, your way. However you think of your gaming style - hardcore, old school, or purely nostalgic - the Wii U Pro Controller puts you in the game," reads the official description for the controller.

"Designed for accessibility and extended gameplay comfort, the Wii U Pro Controller features the dual analog sticks and ergonomic button layout that you've come to expect, as well as a rechargeable battery that can last up to 80 hours on a single charge.

"The Wii U Pro Controller can be used for playing a variety of games - from packaged games at retail to downloadable games from the Nintendo eShop. Look on the back of Wii U game packaging to see which games use the Wii U Pro Controller. Not compatible with the Wii system or games."

By comparison a fully charged Wii U GamePad will last for 3-5 hours, according to comments made by Nintendo of Japan in June. The Xbox 360 controller battery lasts for roughly 25 hours, while the PS3 pad has about 20 hours worth of charge time in it.

Nintendo hasn't confirmed if the Pro Controller figure is accurate, but we've contacted the company for clarification.

Ubisoft's Michel Ancel, who is developing Rayman Legends for Wii U, said this week that the Wii U GamePad has no latency issues.

Black Ops 2: New trailer airing during tonight's Poland vs. England match

A new Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 trailer is set to air during the half-time break in ITV's coverage of tonight's Poland vs. England World Cup qualifier.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Screenshot Publisher Activision confirmed this evening's world premiere of the new trailer on Twitter. Expect to see a lot more of the game in the coming weeks as the marketing push builds steadily towards the Black Ops 2 release date of November 13.

Yesterday US retail giant GameStop said it's anticipating its "biggest game launch of all time" after Black Ops 2 pre-orders broke company records.

Ealier this week Activision announced the first Black Ops 2 DLC details. The company has reworked its Call of Duty Elite service, which will no longer feature separate premium and free tiers. Instead, all service features will now be free to all, with additional game content to be delivered in four separate packages, which are available to pre-purchase with the Black Ops 2 DLC Season Pass.

Skyrim DLC 'Dragonborn' to introduce dragon mounting - report

The next Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim DLC will reportedly be called Dragonborn.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Screenshot That's according to Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC players who mined the filenames contained in the sprawling RPG's most recent update and unearthed multiple references to "DLC2" and "Dragonborn".

The uncovered files also hint at the introduction of dragon mounting and a return to Elder Scrolls III's Morrowind setting, reports OXM, which spotted the Skyrim fans' handiwork.

Bethesda parent company Zenimax trademarked Dragonborn for use in reference to downloadable games software earlier this year, so this is certainly plausible.

Xbox 360 and PC players have already been treated to two Skyrim DLC packs in the form of Dawnguard and Hearthfire. Bethesda said earlier this month that it has no new information to share about its ongoing efforts to release Skyrim PS3 DLC.

Two more Irrational staffers leave Bioshock: Infinite team

Yeah because Microsoft are the Anti Christ compared to the angelic Sony and Ninty.

Seems a bit extreme mate, anti christ or angelic , sorry my category system isnt as black or white as that. Just looking at Microsofts repeated strategy of "Embrace, extend and extinguish" into different areas of technology, why would they not continue this behaviour in the games industry , which is possibly the biggest market of all time . Nintendo and Sonys "crime" seems to be a real innocence or naivety and a wish to play fair . Microsoft behaviour resulted them in losing a huge court case for there disgusting behaviour (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Microsoft) , and the similarities between that case and the recent hacking case with Murdoch are strikingly similar , only a lot worse in Microsofts case. The judge was literally laughing at Gates in the end with his constant inability to remember anything (with email evidence to the contrary) , and they repeteadly falsified video evidence (honestly take a look its hilarious, in a kinda awfull fashion)

The thing is i was really looking forward to Bioshock infinite, the video footage of that game blew me away , the animation when certain events happened (no spoilers here) were something else, something really new.

Irrational made a statement that they had some really exciting opportunitys open up in the areas that it appears, these guys were working in.

To put it another way, have you ever gone into a supermarket and you havnt been able to find the product you want, they dont stock it anymore , what they do stock is a slightly cheaper name brand clone of the product that you wanted. It doesnt taste quite the same, its a little blander perhaps a litle cheaper , but thats the only choice, and your kinda stuck with it, shame for the poor company that came up with the product in the first place.

Im typing this on a computer using Vista as its operating system, its known as an operating system which is somewhat like a pig wearing lipstick , funny with Microsofts huge huge profits you would of thought they would of put more into it (bet they made a nice profit though)

You really don't like Microsoft, eh?

There just a company to me, a big massive company but just a company none the less. Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Apple, IBM, Dell, Samsung, HTC . . . They just want our money and as much of it as they can carry!

You really don't like Microsoft, eh?

There just a company to me, a big massive company but just a company none the less. Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Apple, IBM, Dell, Samsung, HTC . . . They just want our money and as much of it as they can carry!

Your welcome to your view , and although true all businesses are there to make money , other companies have a genuine passion and that comes across in their products and the way they conduct themselves. You need to actually go and read the link i have provided and then perhaps the evidence will make you see things a little different.
I am not an unbalanced ranting fanboy , if you search through my posts then you will see i have been on threads defending Kinect when it was in its infancy and the majority were slagging off the tech (semed pretty interesting to me at the time).
After the 360 was released , there was so much mudslinging from microsoft in a kinda stealth social network campaign it was really distastefull and annoying , Sony and Nintendo kept politely quiet, didnt really do Nintendo any harm, but certainly didnt help Sony much , as some of that mud stuck. The last couple of years has really quietened down on that front , and i much prefer it, i just dont want to read that sort of fake gossipy s**t.
When the xbox came out , it provided a console with an online gaming service that worked well and that success was further consolidated in the 360 and loads of people loved/love those consoles, to me though although the tech is obviously great, i dont really trust the company behind those boxes, its a bit like asking a priest to babysit for you
I love zombies but i really wouldnt want Activision to run the gaming industry, EA built the most amazing forward thinking game studio in the UK , then treated there staff like dogs, so not them either, but there are other companies where i have a higher degree of trust with there integrity, like Valve or Nintendo.
PS i also buy free range eggs, and avoid buying super cheap clothes from certain stores , as they obviously have been made in a sweat shop (probably by children), you cant stop businesses behaving in a certain way unless you proactively dont invest in them.

Whoa straw clutcher alert, MS vs Sony, good luck with that. If you care enough to know, you know nothing at all.

Shame about the leavers from Irrational, hopefully Rod God and the rest will still deliver a belter in Bioshock Infinite.

Whoa straw clutcher alert , err just a comment about MS's business strategy, backed up by factual evidence. If you care about the future of gaming, perhaps you'd care enough to take a look at the historical facts, anyhow in the meantime , take a look at this piece by Vanity fair, quite a good read, know enough to care eh mate!

'80s game development pioneer Mike Singleton passes away

Mike Singleton, the programmer who helped cultivate Britain's home computer games industry, has passed away after a battle with cancer. He was 61.

Mike Singleton (1951 - 2012) Mike Singleton (1951 - 2012) Singleton was a trendsetting and prolific games developer in the '80s, having worked on breakthrough projects such as Carrier Command, Lords of Midnight and Midwinter. He helped build waves of games for up-and-coming systems at the time, including the Sinclair ZX81, BBC Micro, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Atari ST, Amiga and PC.

In 2009, Singleton said in an interview with Edge that he still kept with him the files for games he had developed in the past.

"I still have a cardboard box at home full of 100 five-minute tapes which comprise the source code and the graphics of Lords Of Midnight and all the back-ups and back-ups of back-ups," he said.

The games design pioneer also held a positive outlook for the existing games business - one that has transformed dramatically since the heyday of '80s bedroom coding.

"New technology is even more exciting than the old was, even in its day. Our imaginations are still racing to catch up with what's possible now. There's so much more scope for creativity now. In five or six years' time, there will be categories of game no one's dreamed of."

His passing has caused an outpouring of tributes from the industry and fans of his work.

A games designer, under the alias "Wibby", paid respect on a GiantBomb forum:

"Singleton was my first employer, I used to go straight from school to his company for his wisdom and generosity, He was an amazing boss, single father of two young boys but most importantly he was my friend".

"The last 12 months where hard for him he was diagnosed with cancer of the jaw and had to have it removed but he always kept his spirits up, I even sat with him in our local pub for our first post-op beer! Alas last week he died in Switzerland of natural causes."

Games consultant Nicholas Lovell wrote on Twitter:

Ubisoft: Wii U GamePad is really responsive

The Wii U launch is just around the corner, and the GamePad controls are definitely creating a sense of excitement and intrigue, but just how well does the GamePad actually work?

Wii U Screenshot Ubisoft's Michel Ancel - the creator of Rayman, and the man responsible for Rayman Legends on Wii U - has discussed just how advanced the GamePad really is.

In an interview with Nintendo Power, Ancel describes the GamePad as being where "Nintendo is really out in front of things." The GamePad streams content straight from the TV through a wireless connection, so it is natural for people to be concerned with just how well the GamePad can keep up. Ancel has dispelled all fears by simply stating that the GamePad, is "really responsive."

"The response time is crazy," he continued, "In fact, and I think competitors will need some time to [get their solutions] this responsive."

Ancel explains that the GamePad runs at 60 frames per second, with a latency of "just 1/60 of a second, so it's one frame late. It's crazy. It's so fast, it's almost instant."

The Wii U may look like just another Nintendo gimmick to some, but the technology and power we are seeing from this console may just change a few people's minds about this one.

Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified dated

Activision has revealed a Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified release date of Tuesday November 13, 2013 on Vita.

Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified Screenshot November 13 is also the global Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 release date on home consoles and PC.

Speaking in an interview with Activision social media manager Dan Amrich on the One Of Swords blog, Robert Huebner, CEO of Black Ops: Declassified studio Nihilistic Software, outlined what he believes to be the unique features of the Vita Call of Duty game.

While "nearly every aspect" of the controls, player capabilities, weapons and multiplayer features are based on past series entries, "the biggest difference is in terms of the game focus", he said.

"Declassified is not about the big campaign storyline and huge cinematics, it's more focused on the multiplayer essence of Call of Duty and bringing that to a portable device as completely as possible, and in bringing short, objective-based missions and score-driven gameplay with lighter story elements to create what we call the Operations missions.

"Then adding in some bonus modes like Time Trials and Hostiles to make a product that delivers the core Call of Duty experience in a mobile package."

Huebner continued: "The goal was not to make a product that is a port of any past or present Call of Duty game, but to make a tailored experience for the Vita that adds new content and new background about Woods and Mason's careers for players who have played the original Black Ops and will almost certainly be picking up Black Ops 2."

Amrich also said that North American copies of Black Ops: Declassified will include a bonus game download in the form of Call of Duty: Roads to Victory, which was previously only available on PSP.

Prey 2 'in limbo', says developer

Human Head's open-world sequel Prey 2 isn't canned, it's just in a state of "limbo".

Prey 2 Screenshot That's according to Human Head's Nathan Cheever, a designer at the studio, who corroborates with recent claims that the game hasn't been completely binned.

"BTW, P2 hasn't been officially canceled, only in limbo," said Cheever in a Tweet today (thanks Kotaku).

Bethesda VP of PR and marketing Pete Hines in August denied reports that he had confirmed Prey 2's cancellation in a Dutch interview, blaming mistranslation.

The confusion surrounding the status of Human Head's sequel, Prey 2, started with publisher Bethesda confirming a delay beyond 2012 back in April, citing quality concerns.

Unlike the linear shooter gameplay offered by 2006's well-received original, Human Head has said Prey 2 will feature an open world for players to bounty-hunt aliens in. Check out a trailer here.

Ghost Watch coming to 3DS

Level 5 released a trailer for a game titled Ghost Watch last year, but it was a mystery as to what platform it would be landing on. The mystery is now solved, with the announcement that it will be a 3DS title.

Click to view larger image Ghost Watch was revealed as a 3DS game in the latest issue of Japanese magazine, CoroCoromagazine - which thankfully Silconera has translated.

From what we can tell, the game follows the story of a little boy who has a watch that allows him to see and befriend ghosts.

There is no release date, or mention of a Western localisation, but you can watch the trailer here. It's not in English though, so don't expect it to make much sense.

Opinion: PES is back on form, and that's good news even for FIFA fans

You might not agree with me, but I think PES 2013 is as good as FIFA 13. In many ways, it's even better. But it barely matters; FIFA has completely, utterly, outsold PES so far.

This week it emerged that the latest FIFA has incredibly sold more than one million copies in just its first week - a feat previously achieved only by three Call of Duty games.

PES 2013 Screenshot That huge number should see FIFA 13 outsell PES by even more than last year's 20:1 victory - a staggering ratio given Pro Evo's PS2 heyday, where it was 'only' outsold by around 2:1. In fact, in its PES 5 / PES 6 halcyon days, at its highest point of critical advantage over FIFA, Konami's game sold more copies on PS2 than EA's game.

Those days have long gone.

The shift came when PES struggled - largely, on a technical level - to make the transition from PS2 to PS3 / 360, while FIFA's ambitious, if initially imperfect, 'next-gen' engine gave it a clear visual advantage. EA's work wasn't just cosmetic - the new engine allowing 'true' 360? dribbling and superior physics.

FIFA now commands an enviable advantage, after years of genuine gameplay improvements (precision dribbling, manual run prompts, right stick skill moves etc etc) coupled to the ever-present licenses and increasingly innovative community and online modes (like Ulitmate Team).

FIFA's ascension is a masterclass in competitive behaviour: achieve qualitative parity (albeit though imitating a rival's key attributes), innovate on this solid base, stress your Unique Selling Point (USP) - in this case licences - and leverage the power of social dynamics.

"However much PES has improved, FIFA is still excellent. If you invested 100s of hours in one, the other always feels alien"

When FIFA hit a tipping point in terms of sales (probably around the time of FIFA 10), its dominance snowballed into inevitability; exacerbated by the online nature of modern consoles. Even if you wanted to play PES, you'd never find a friend to do it. FIFA owned the playground, and there's no greater sales motivator than peer pressure.

Bottom line: reports suggest that PES 2013 has sold less than it did last year in the UK despite being a much better game. The global figures may not be quite as stark, since PES is strong in southern Europe and South America, but Konami will clearly be alarmed.

Whatever happens, Konami shouldn't give up hope, or lose focus, based on these early figures.

As FIFA proves, gaining critical parity is only the first step of the battle. It takes a year or two for word to get out, and to disrupt social networks and online cliques. EA understands that. It's won the minds of young gamers (who'll buy updates for years), while PES has fought to retain its ageing audience - without appealing enough to the new.

Even now, PES 2013 is a bit too inaccessible. The hardcore depth is why PES is amazing - but it MUST make concessions to entice people back. Old friends who used to love PES have said the same thing: why doesn't the knuckle shot work? *How* hard is the chest and score challenge?

Yet, despite it all, everyone agrees: when you get it right, PES 2013 feels amazing. The shooting, that feeling of contact... it's just not something you get from FIFA, for me at least. PES offers control like nothing else, as precise and rewarding as an old-school Japanese beat-em-up like Street Fighter - what Japanese game design does best.

Konami is just about to open a PES London Studio, and next year's game will use Hideo Kojima's new Fox Engine, so PES 2014 should look much, much better - imagine MGS Ground Zeroes' flawless animations in a football context - and get rid of all that Jap-lish menu and translation nonsense.

PES 2013 Screenshot The Master League, while a lesson in RPG-style stat development and feedback loops, exists in a cartoon netherworld where Wearside pay ?6.75m for C.Ronaldo (all prices are stated in wages, just unlike real life). It NEEDS to feel western to bring people onboard: from the design of its menus, to tutorials, to Master League language and events.

PES's challenge is staying the course, and not letting these initially flat sales get them down. The game is good. Great, even. It'll speak for itself. But word of mouth is where the battle starts.

As a fan of football games, *everyone* should care about the future of PES. The worst-case scenario is a world without Konami's series, in which FIFA would achieve a total monopoly on football games. In that scenario there's only one winner - and it's not the consumer.

Every great team, firm or competitor is defined by its keenest rival - look at Madrid and Barcelona, Federer vs Nadal, Borg vs McEnroe, PS2 vs Xbox... the list goes on. You stay on top by being *forced* there, a great rival gives definition to your actions and pushes you to reach greater heights.

This won't happen, since the cleverest thing PES did in recent years is latch onto the emerging South American market - consolidated by the acquisition of the Copa Libertadores and Campeonato Brasilerio Serie A (Brazillian league) license - that should keep them buoyant.

Me? I don't really care what game you prefer. I love FIFA, too, and gave it higher scores than PES in PSM3 over the last few years. But what I would say is this: PES 2013 is one of the most sublime football simulations in history, with an utterly staggering depth of control yielding incredible rewards for those with the patience to persevere.

Is it perfect? Damn, no, not by a long stretch - but it does at least deserve an audience. Give the second demo a shot. Rent it for a few nights. Pick it up second hand in a month or so. Hey - or buy it full-price. For those with the patience, it won't disappoint.

Scoff if you will, but score that first chipped R2 shot in a heated Champions League game, or nutmeg your first full back using a taxing R1 / R2 combo subject to *cruel* timing... and it all makes sense.

Like any team under pressure, PES's first step is to stem the tide. As its confidence grows, results will follow.

Lightning Returns FFXIII: Amazon lists March 2013 release

Update: Square Enix has told us that the release date listed by Amazon is factually incorrect, while reiterating that the game is set for release in 2013.

Original story: Amazon UK is listing Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII for release on March 29, 2013.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Screenshot The online retailer updated its pre-order page with the Friday release date earlier this week, Examiner reports.

It may well just be a placeholder though, as Famitsu reported last month that the PS3 and Xbox 360 game is just 30 per cent complete.

Revealed at a Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Event in September and set for release some time next year, the game is being billed as the last entry in the "Lightning saga". It'll feature the FFXIII heroine in a tense finale as a doomsday clock counts down 13 days until the end of the world.
