Microsoft has said that it has no plans to bring the latest version of its 3D graphics API to older operating systems, meaning that Windows 7 owners who don't want to upgrade will miss out on a number of new features.
Writing on the Microsoft Answers forum, Microsoft employee Daniel Moth said: "DirectX 11.1 is part of Windows 8, just like DirectX 11 was part of Windows 7. DirectX 11 was made available for Vista .... but at this point there is no plan for DirectX 11.1 to be made available on Windows 7."
A full list of DirectX 11.1's new features can be found here. Arguably the biggest addition over the older DirectX 11 is native stereoscopic 3D support, which means PC games and applications offer support for viewing content via stereoscopic 3D glasses as default, Neowin reports.
Contacted for an official comment, Microsoft told the site that the company has "nothing further to share".
